40 gsm spunbond: bag and ground separation weight
40 gsm is the heavy end of standard spunbond: bags that carry weight, separator layers under roads, covers that take handling.

| Property | 40 gsm typical range | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Weight tolerance | ±2 g/m² | Batch average |
| Tensile MD | 44 to 54 N/5 cm | Strip test |
| Tensile CD | 26 to 32 N/5 cm | Bag handle attachment |

| Elongation MD | 30 to 50 % | Lower than light grades |
| UV option | Stabilised for 12 to 24 months | Declared per grade |
Bags and handles
A bag fails at the handle, not in the body. At 40 gsm the web takes a stitched or welded handle without tearing out, which is why reusable shopping bags settle here rather than at 25 gsm. The printability also improves, since a heavier web does not stretch during printing.
Geotextile separation
As a separator under a road or a drainage layer, the required property is puncture resistance against aggregate, measured by CBR. 40 gsm is the light end of that use, and it is only appropriate where the subgrade is firm. Soft ground needs a heavier grade or a woven.
What to specify for outdoor service
UV stabilisation in months of expected service, plus the installation condition. A stabilised web installed over sharp stone fails mechanically long before it fails in sunlight, and buyers sometimes blame the additive for the wrong failure.
Other weights in this range
This grade sits in the PP spunbond range. Buyers comparing across weights usually ask for two or three of these at sample stage, because the decision is made on the converting line rather than on the data sheet.
- 15 gsm spunbond - 15 gsm spunbond covers the most area per kilogram of any grade we quote. It is.
- 20 gsm spunbond - 20 gsm is the grade most hygiene laminates are built on: light enough for cove.
- 25 gsm spunbond - 25 gsm is the standard outer layer of a three-ply medical mask and the body of.
- 30 gsm spunbond - 30 gsm is the grade where spunbond becomes a structural fabric: mattress pocke.

Questions
Common questions
Is 40 gsm strong enough for a shopping bag?
For a reusable bag with a stitched handle, yes. Load rating depends on the seam, so test the finished bag rather than the roll.
Can it be used as a geotextile?
As a separator on firm ground, yes. Soft subgrade needs a heavier or woven product, and the specification should state the CBR value.
Does it print well?
Better than lighter grades because it stretches less under tension. Corona treatment is recommended before printing.
