Nonwoven fabric for mattress and furniture
Pocket spring production is an automated process running at speed. The fabric has to feed flat, weld predictably and survive the spring without splitting at the seam.
At a glance
Specification at a glance
| Requirement | Typical specification | Decides |
|---|---|---|
| Basis weight | Light to medium weights | Cost and weld behaviour |
| Tensile | MD and CD minimums | Seam strength in use |
| Elongation | Balanced MD and CD | Feeding and forming |
| Weldability | Compatible with the machine | Seam integrity |
| Roll | Width and diameter for the unwind | Line uptime |
| Surface | Consistent friction | Tracking on the machine |
It is a machine fit problem before it is a material problem
Pocket spring lines run fast and the fabric is under tension from the unwind to the weld station. A fabric that meets the tensile specification can still fail if the roll diameter, the splice or the surface friction does not suit the machine.
Send the machine make, the line speed and the roll size the unwind accepts. Those three items prevent most of the failed trials we see in this application.
Weld and seam behaviour
The seam is where pocket spring covers fail. Weld strength depends on the polymer, the coat weight if the fabric is laminated, and the welding parameters. A grade that welds well on one machine can be marginal on another.
Test the weld on your equipment, not on a sample sheet. It is the only measurement that predicts production.
Send the machine data with the specification
Machine make, line speed, width and roll size are enough to start a pocket spring project.
Questions
Common questions
Do you supply laminated pocket spring fabric?
Laminated structures are quoted per specification after a check on the layers and the welding behaviour.
What width is available?
Parent rolls are slit to the width your machine runs. Send the working width and the roll diameter limit.
Can you run a trial roll at production width?
Yes. A trial roll is quoted as a paid batch so the material matches what will ship in bulk.
