25 gsm spunbond: the medical cover weight
25 gsm is the standard outer layer of a three-ply medical mask and the body of most disposable shoe covers and light isolation gowns.
At a glance
Specification at a glance
| Property | 25 gsm typical range | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Weight tolerance | ±1.5 g/m² | Batch average |
| Tensile MD | 28 to 36 N/5 cm | Strip test |
| Tensile CD | 16 to 22 N/5 cm | Holds the ear loop anchor |
| Air permeability | 150 to 250 l/m²/s | Breathability for masks |
| Softness | Soft enough for face contact | Finer filament grades better |
| Colour | White, blue, green standard | Masterbatch colours on request |
Why masks use 25 gsm outside
The outer layer has to hold the ear loop weld, resist a splash, and still let the wearer breathe. At 25 gsm the web welds reliably by ultrasonic, keeps enough tensile to survive the loop pull test, and stays permeable enough that the breathing resistance stays inside the mask standard.
Going lighter saves cost and loses weld strength; going heavier improves splash resistance but raises breathing resistance.
Shoe covers and light gowns
The same grade is used for shoe covers because it takes a heat seal and does not split at the ankle elastic. For isolation gowns the grade is usually laminated or paired with a coating, since 25 gsm alone is not a barrier to liquid.
Colour and additive choices
Blue and green are masterbatch colours and do not change mechanical properties. Antistatic and flame retardant additives do, and both need to be declared in the specification because they change the test values.
Other weights in this range
This grade sits in the PP spunbond range. Buyers comparing across weights usually ask for two or three of these at sample stage, because the decision is made on the converting line rather than on the data sheet.
- 15 gsm spunbond - 15 gsm spunbond covers the most area per kilogram of any grade we quote. It is.
- 20 gsm spunbond - 20 gsm is the grade most hygiene laminates are built on: light enough for cove.
- 30 gsm spunbond - 30 gsm is the grade where spunbond becomes a structural fabric: mattress pocke.
- 40 gsm spunbond - 40 gsm is the heavy end of standard spunbond: bags that carry weight, separato.

Questions
Common questions
Is 25 gsm spunbond enough for a medical mask?
It is the standard outer layer. The barrier comes from the meltblown middle layer, so the mask is a three layer structure, not a single fabric.
Can it be ultrasonically welded?
Yes, that is the normal converting method for masks and covers. Welding strength depends on the pattern and the dwell time.
What colours are available?
White, medical blue and green are standard. Other colours need a masterbatch run and a minimum quantity.
