80 gsm spunlace: when the web has to hold its shape
80 gsm is the top of the spunlace range we quote. The buyers are filtration, polishing and medical drapes, and the requirement is usually dimensional stability rather than softness.
At a glance
Specification at a glance
| Property | 80 gsm typical range | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Weight tolerance | ±3 g/m² | Batch average |
| Tensile MD | 48 to 60 N/5 cm | Dry |
| Tensile CD | 20 to 26 N/5 cm | Better balance than lighter grades |
| Air permeability | 40 to 80 l/m²/s | Depends on entanglement |
| Dimensional stability | Under 2 % shrink at 90 °C | Dry heat test |
| Surface | Smooth, low loft | Suits coating and lamination |
Why filtration buyers use spunlace as a support
A pleated filter needs a substrate that holds a pleat without creeping. At 80 gsm the web has enough fibre per unit area that the pleat stays put after the membrane is cast on it, and the surface is smooth enough that the coating does not wick into the web unevenly.
It is a support, not the filter. Efficiency comes from the membrane or the meltblown layer on top.
Polishing and surface finishing
For polishing cloths the requirement flips: the web must not scratch and must not shed. A dense 80 gsm web with fine fibre and a calendered surface does both, and the lint level is checked after a wet abrasion cycle rather than on the dry roll.
Cutting and seaming
At this weight ultrasonic cutting gives a sealed edge that does not fray, which matters for drape and for any product that is handled wet. Blade cutting is cheaper but leaves loose fibre on the edge.
Other weights in this range
This grade sits in the Spunlace range. Buyers comparing across weights usually ask for two or three of these at sample stage, because the decision is made on the converting line rather than on the data sheet.
- 35 gsm spunlace - At 35 gsm a spunlace web is thin enough to see light through and still strong .
- 45 gsm spunlace - 45 gsm is the middle of the wet wipe range: heavy enough to hold a 300 percent.
- 50 gsm spunlace - 50 gsm is where a wipe stops being a baby product and starts being a tool: adu.
- 60 gsm spunlace - 60 gsm is where spunlace stops being a consumer wipe and becomes a working clo.
- 70 gsm spunlace - 70 gsm is the top of the standard wipe range. At this weight the web behaves m.

Questions
Common questions
Is 80 gsm spunlace a filter medium?
It is used as a support layer under a membrane. Filtration efficiency comes from the membrane or meltblown layer, not from the spunlace itself.
Can it be calendered?
Yes, calendering closes the surface and reduces air permeability. Specify the target thickness or permeability, since calendering changes both.
What is the typical core and roll size?
76 mm core, roll diameter up to 1,200 mm. The length is set by the weight and the diameter you can handle.
