Heavy grades
70 gsm spunlace: heavy, low lint, hard to tear
70 gsm is the top of the standard wipe range. At this weight the web behaves more like a light textile than a wipe, and the buyers are industrial and medical rather than retail.

Specification at a glance
| Property | 70 gsm typical range | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Weight tolerance | ±2.5 g/m² | Batch average |
| Tensile MD | 42 to 52 N/5 cm | Dry, strip test |
| Tensile CD | 18 to 23 N/5 cm | Decides tear at fold |
| Wet strength retention | 60 to 75 % | Higher than lighter grades |
| Lint | Low, suitable for controlled areas | Depends on fibre length |
| Abrasion | 150+ cycles to hole | Martindale, grade dependent |
Where the extra weight pays back
Heavy wipes are bought by factories that count wipes per shift, not packs per pallet. A 70 gsm wipe used with a solvent survives several passes where a 45 gsm wipe is discarded after one, so the cost per cleaned surface drops even though the fabric price per tonne is roughly 40 percent higher.
The same logic applies in medical procedure packs, where a torn drape is a clinical event rather than a complaint.
Lint, and why weight alone does not fix it
Lint comes from loose fibre ends, so fibre length, entanglement pressure and the finishing step matter as much as weight. A 70 gsm web with short fibre still sheds. Buyers in printing, coating and cleanroom-adjacent applications should specify the lint test and the acceptance limit rather than the grade alone.
The handling cost nobody quotes
At 70 gsm a roll of the same diameter carries about half the length of a 35 gsm roll, so changeover frequency doubles and the converter needs more floor space per tonne. That cost is real and it should be in the comparison before the fabric price is agreed.
Other weights in this range
This grade sits in the Spunlace range. Buyers comparing across weights usually ask for two or three of these at sample stage, because the decision is made on the converting line rather than on the data sheet.
- 35 gsm spunlace - At 35 gsm a spunlace web is thin enough to see light through and still strong .
- 45 gsm spunlace - 45 gsm is the middle of the wet wipe range: heavy enough to hold a 300 percent.
- 50 gsm spunlace - 50 gsm is where a wipe stops being a baby product and starts being a tool: adu.
- 60 gsm spunlace - 60 gsm is where spunlace stops being a consumer wipe and becomes a working clo.

Questions
Common questions
Is 70 gsm reusable?
It survives several passes with solvent, but it is not a laundered textile. If the product claims reuse, specify the number of cycles and the strength after them.
Can 70 gsm be sterilised?
The web tolerates ethylene oxide and gamma at typical doses. Confirm the dose with your sterilisation provider, because strength loss depends on it.
What is the widest roll available?
Standard widths up to 3,200 mm, slit on request. Tell us the converter width and we quote the slitting loss.
