80 gsm polyester: the filtration and ground workhorse
80 gsm polyester is chosen for filter bags and separation layers: strong, chemically stable, and dimensionally predictable when wet.
At a glance
Specification at a glance
| Property | 80 gsm typical range | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Polymer | 100 % polyester | Needle punched or thermal |
| Tensile MD | 60 to 80 N/5 cm | Higher than PP at same weight |
| Tensile CD | 40 to 60 N/5 cm | Better balance |
| Elongation | 40 to 70 % | Absorbs impact |
| Chemical resistance | Good in acids, poor in strong alkali | Application dependent |
| Service temperature | Up to 130 °C continuous | Grade dependent |
Filter bags and dust collection
Polyester holds its shape at the temperatures a dust collector sees and resists the acids in flue gas. The 80 gsm grade is the light end for bag filters, usually paired with a scrim or a coating depending on the dust load.
Ground separation
Polyester is the default separator under roads and drainage because it does not degrade in alkaline soil the way some fibres do. The specification is CBR puncture resistance, not weight alone.
Wet strength and rewetting
Unlike a viscose blend, polyester does not lose strength when wet and does not hold water in the fibre. That makes it the right choice where the material stays wet, and the wrong choice where absorbency is the point.
Other weights in this range
This grade sits in the Polyester range. Buyers comparing across weights usually ask for two or three of these at sample stage, because the decision is made on the converting line rather than on the data sheet.

Questions
Common questions
Is polyester nonwoven UV stable?
Not by default. Outdoor service needs a stabilised grade, and the specification should state the months of exposure.
Can it be used for wipes?
Only as a blend component for strength. Pure polyester does not absorb enough to work as a wipe on its own.
What temperature can it take?
Up to about 130 °C continuous, depending on the grade. Above that, aramid or glass media is the correct product.
