Soft grades
80 gsm ES hot rolled: soft, thick, structural
80 gsm ES is the heavy end of the soft range: padding, liners and medical soft goods where loft and compression recovery matter more than tensile.
At a glance
Specification at a glance
| Property | 80 gsm typical range | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Structure | PE sheath, PP core | Thermal bonded |
| Tensile MD | 30 to 40 N/5 cm | Structural for a soft web |
| Tensile CD | 16 to 22 N/5 cm | Holds shape |
| Thickness | 0.9 to 1.4 mm | At 2 kPa |
| Compression recovery | Good | Loft returns after packing |
| Bonding | Thermal only | Binder free |
Padding and soft medical goods
At 80 gsm the web has enough thickness to cushion, which lighter grades cannot do at any reasonable number of layers. It is used in medical padding, protective liners and soft goods where the product is judged by feel and recovery.
Compression in the pack
A soft web that stays compressed after a month in a carton has lost the property it was bought for. Compression recovery belongs in the specification alongside weight and thickness, tested after a defined load and time.
What to watch in converting
Heat. A soft ES web will flatten permanently at a nip temperature close to the sheath point, and the loss is invisible on the roll. Lines that run hot need a cooled nip or a different structure.
Other weights in this range
This grade sits in the ES hot rolled range. Buyers comparing across weights usually ask for two or three of these at sample stage, because the decision is made on the converting line rather than on the data sheet.
- 40 gsm ES hot rolled - 40 gsm ES is a PE sheath, PP core bicomponent web bonded by heat alone. No bin.
- 60 gsm ES hot rolled - 60 gsm ES keeps the soft hand of the lighter grade and adds enough tensile to .

Questions
Common questions
Can 80 gsm ES be used as a wipe?
It can be used wet, but it is not absorbent like a viscose blend. Wipes normally use spunlace.
Is it breathable?
Yes, the thermal bond leaves open area. It is a soft porous web, not a barrier.
What is the typical thickness tolerance?
About ±0.15 mm at 2 kPa. Thickness is measured under load, so the test method belongs in the specification.
