Soft grades
60 gsm ES hot rolled: loft with more strength
60 gsm ES keeps the soft hand of the lighter grade and adds enough tensile to run through a high speed converting line without web breaks.
At a glance
Specification at a glance
| Property | 60 gsm typical range | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Structure | PE sheath, PP core | Thermal bonded |
| Tensile MD | 22 to 30 N/5 cm | Runs at line speed |
| Tensile CD | 12 to 17 N/5 cm | Better than 40 gsm |
| Elongation MD | 55 to 80 % | Conforming |
| Loft | Higher than spunbond at same weight | Airy hand |
| Bonding | Thermal only | No chemical binder |
Core cover and wrap applications
Around an absorbent core the web has to contain loose pulp without blocking liquid, and it has to survive the forming drum. At 60 gsm there is enough strength to run at speed and enough loft to keep the surface dry.
Why converters move up from 40 gsm
Line speed and web breaks. A 40 gsm ES web at high speed is prone to tension wrinkles that become folds in the finished product. The 60 gsm version carries the same softness with more margin, at roughly 50 percent more fibre cost.
Lamination and print
It bonds to PE film at low temperature, which is an advantage on a line that cannot run hot. Printing needs care: ink penetration changes the hand, and the softness claim is often the reason the product exists.
Other weights in this range
This grade sits in the ES hot rolled range. Buyers comparing across weights usually ask for two or three of these at sample stage, because the decision is made on the converting line rather than on the data sheet.
- 40 gsm ES hot rolled - 40 gsm ES is a PE sheath, PP core bicomponent web bonded by heat alone. No bin.
- 80 gsm ES hot rolled - 80 gsm ES is the heavy end of the soft range: padding, liners and medical soft.

Questions
Common questions
Is 60 gsm ES suitable for adult hygiene?
Yes, as a core cover or a wrap. Adult products often go heavier for a drier surface feel.
Can it replace spunlace in a wipe?
No. ES is not absorbent in the way a viscose blend is. It is a cover and containment layer.
What is the roll diameter limit?
Up to about 1,200 mm. Softer webs compress, so the winding tension has to be set for the grade.
