Buying questions
Can nonwoven be made with recycled polypropylene?
Yes, and demand is rising, but recycled PP is not a drop-in replacement. It changes colour, odour, strength consistency and the documents a buyer has to produce.
At a glance
Specification at a glance
| Property | Virgin PP | Recycled PP |
|---|---|---|
| Colour | Consistent | Warmer, needs masking |
| Strength consistency | High | Batch variation higher |
| Odour | Low | Requires deodorising |
| Food contact | Straightforward | Depends on source and process |
| Cost | Reference | Volatile, not always cheaper |
What recyclate does to the line
Recycled resin has a wider molecular weight distribution, so filament formation and bonding need adjustment. Buyers who switch at the same line settings see more breaks and more weight variation, then blame the supplier.
The compliance question
For food contact and medical use, the source of the recyclate matters more than the percentage. A declaration has to trace the feedstock and the process, and many recyclate streams cannot provide that today.

Questions
Common questions
What recycled content is realistic?
It varies by grade and application. Ask for the percentage by weight and the traceability document, not just a claim.
Does recycled content lower price?
Not reliably. Recyclate prices move independently of virgin resin and often carry a premium for certified streams.
Can it be used for wipes?
For industrial wipes sometimes. Skin contact and food contact products need a feedstock declaration first.
