What width tolerance should I expect on slit nonwoven?
Slitting is mechanical, so width varies a little along the roll and between rolls. The tolerance you write decides whether that becomes a complaint.
At a glance
Specification at a glance
| Parent width | Common slit range | Typical tolerance |
|---|---|---|
| 1,600 mm | 50 to 1,600 mm | ±2 mm |
| 2,000 mm | 50 to 2,000 mm | ±2 mm |
| 3,200 mm | 100 to 3,200 mm | ±3 mm |
| Narrow slits | Under 100 mm | ±1 mm, slower running |
Where width goes wrong
Three sources: blade wear, web wander on the unwind, and tension difference across the parent roll. Blade wear shows as a gradual drift over a long run; wander shows as a wave in the edge that only appears at speed.
How to specify it
State the nominal width, the tolerance, and where it is measured. A tolerance without a measurement position is unenforceable, and the first argument will be about where the tape was held.

Questions
Common questions
Can width be held tighter?
Yes with a slower line and fresh blades, at a cost. Ask for the tolerance you actually need.
Does slitting affect strength at the edge?
A clean cut does not. A worn blade can leave a ragged edge that initiates a tear.
Is ultrasonic slitting available?
Yes, it seals the edge and is used where edge fibre is a problem.
