Supply and commercial
Why do industrial wipes cost more than consumer wipes of the same weight?
Because the requirements are different: solvent resistance, abrasion and lint matter more than softness, and the fibre blend that delivers them costs more.
At a glance
Specification at a glance
| Requirement | Consumer wipe | Industrial wipe |
|---|---|---|
| Fibre blend | Viscose rich | Polyester rich |
| Weight | 40 to 50 gsm | 60 to 80 gsm |
| Solvent resistance | Not required | Essential |
| Abrasion | Light | Repeated scrubbing |
| Lint | Tolerated | Often specified |
Why polyester share rises
Polyester resists solvents and adds scrub without shedding. Industrial wipes typically run 60 to 80 gsm with a polyester share of 50 percent or more, which is why they feel different from a baby wipe at the same thickness.
Dispensing changes the format
Roll wipes for dispensers need consistent perforation and a centre feed that does not tear. That is a converting specification, and it is usually what fails first when a consumer grade is substituted.

Questions
Common questions
Can consumer wipes be used industrially?
For light cleaning sometimes. With solvents they tear and shed.
What about flame resistance?
Solvent wipes should be assessed for flammability with the solvent, not only as dry fabric.
Is lint measurable?
Yes, by gravimetric or particle count methods. Specify the method and the limit.
