What should a nonwoven batch code tell me?
A usable batch code traces back to the fibre lot, the line, the shift and the test values. If it only identifies a date, it cannot answer the first question in an audit.
At a glance
Specification at a glance
| Level | Recorded | Retention |
|---|---|---|
| Fibre lot | Supplier, lot, incoming test | 2 years or per contract |
| Production batch | Line, shift, date, settings | 2 years |
| Test values | Per batch, method stated | 2 years |
| Shipment | Batch to pallet to container | Contract dependent |
Why the chain breaks
It breaks at the pallet. A roll carries a code, the pallet label carries a different one, and the container list carries a third. When a complaint arrives eighteen months later, nobody can connect them.
What an auditor asks
Show the record for this roll, then the record for the batch it came from, then the fibre lot, then the test result. A supplier who can do that in ten minutes is worth a premium.

Questions
Common questions
Is traceability required by law?
For medical and automotive supply chains in most markets, effectively yes. Elsewhere it is a customer requirement.
How long must records be kept?
Commonly two years, longer for medical and automotive. It is set by contract as often as by regulation.
Can traceability be added later?
The record system can, but the batch data cannot be reconstructed. It has to be captured at production.
